While many Web.com Tour players are in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fl. this weekend playing for their PGA Tour lives. Many players are speaking out on a wanted change to the Tour Championship and Web.com Tour finale. In how points, cards and PGA Tour priority are calculated.
This year, 50 PGA Tour cards will be awarded, with half of them already having been secured by the top 25 money winners from the Web.com Tour’s regular season money list.
The other 25 cards come off the money list from the Web.com Tour Finals, which replaced Q-School this year as the PGA Tour’s system for doling out cards.
In 2012, the PGA Tour awarded cards to the top 25 on the Web.com Tour’s season-ending money list. As well as awarding PGA Tour cards to the top 25 at Q-School.
Some players this week have been out spoken about wanting to see a change in the way all of this is handled in the future.
“I think it’s a little unfair that guys who finished 26th, 27th or 28th [on the Web.com regular-season money list] and guys who finish 75th start the same at Finals,” said Adam Crawford, who finished 71st on the Web.com Tour regular season money list to just squeeze into the Finals.
“You might finish second on the regular season money list, have a little injury for the Finals and end up with the last card."
“You come second on the Web.com Tour over the course of the year, I think you should be rewarded for that.”
Alexandre Rocha told the Golf Channel’s Kelly Tilghman after his third round, that he felt it was unfair for players who have already secured their Tour card on the regular-season Web.com Tour money list to lose ground in the priority rankings in the four-event Finals series.
It's not yet clear on how the Tour will proceed in 2014 or moving forward with awarding players with PGA Tour cards. For now, this Sunday will make or break many golfers hearts in Ponte Vedra Beach.
